What to Know After a Car Accident

Massachusetts Insurance Law – What’s Covered

If you’re injured in a motor vehicle accident, several types of insurance coverage may apply:

  • Medical Bills: The first $2,000 is paid by your Personal Injury Protection (PIP) coverage. Additional medical costs are billed to your health insurance. If you lack health coverage, PIP may pay up to $8,000.
  • Lost Wages: PIP may cover 75% of lost earnings, up to $8,000.
  • Serious Injuries or Death: If medical bills exceed $2,000 or you suffer a major injury, you may be eligible for compensation for pain, scarring, disability, or loss of enjoyment of life.
  • Uninsured/Underinsured Drivers: You may recover damages through your own or a family member’s auto policy.

After an Accident: Gather driver and witness information, report violations to police, seek medical care, notify your insurer, and take photos of vehicles, injuries, and the scene.

What You Should Do Following a Car Accident

  • Collect driver & vehicle info (names, addresses, phone numbers).
  • Get witness names & contact details.
  • Tell police about any traffic violations.
  • Seek medical attention for injuries.
  • Notify your insurance company promptly.
  • Photograph vehicles, injuries, and the scene.
  • Contact a lawyer to protect your rights.
